RuleSpace, a provider of filtering to many of the largest ISPs, issued a press release today announcing some new category additions. Oddly, I couldn’t find a description of RuleSpace’s categories anywhere on their website. Today’s press release states:
In this release, the existing engines have increased accuracy levels and there are 10 brand new content categories supported:
Anonymizer site detection, Dating & Personal Ads, Gambling, Hate, Lifestyle, Lingerie, Nudism, Sexual Advice, Sexual Education, Weapons
New categories introduced this year include:
Art & Museums, Energy, Food & Restaurants, Freeware & Shareware, Internet Telephony, Music (previously part of Entertainment category), Pets, Placeholder, Real Estate, Self Harm, Streaming Media, Weddings
I’m glad to see a category called “Self Harm” where I assume “Pro-Ana” and pro-suicide sites will go, a type of site that doesn’t seem to fit conventional categories like “violence.” But why would anyone want/need to filter categories like “Pets,” “Energy,” and “Food & Restaurants?”

I can see “pets” and “food…” for corporations, but I fail to understand “energy” in any operational environment
